For nearly 80 years, Sawtooth School for Visual Art has been a creative hub for the region—an energetic craft school environment in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Our year-long Artist-in-Residence programs encourage emerging artists to develop new skills, foster community connections, and create new bodies of work while assisting with studio operations. Sawtooth’s residencies prioritize self-exploration and personal growth while also providing ample support for professional development, including possible teaching and exhibition opportunities.
Sawtooth’s Print Studio is one of the few community print shops in North Carolina. It offers facilities that support a wide range of printmaking techniques, including intaglio, monoprint, relief, book arts, and letterpress. The studio features access to various presses. It emphasizes innovative and solventless techniques, and the intaglio facilities use low-toxicity grounds and removers.
The Schupbach-Gordon Resident in Printmaking is a year-long program designed for emerging printmakers to enhance their skills, explore innovative techniques, and acquire valuable teaching experiences in a nurturing and inclusive setting. The ideal candidate for the program should hold a BA/BFA or MA/MFA in printmaking and be self-directed with the ability to work independently. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated artistic excellence as well as an interest in experimentation and innovative techniques.
BENEFITS:
Twelve months of 24/7 access to the Sawtooth Print Shop when class is not in session.
The resident will receive a monthly stipend of $500, for a total of $6000.
They will have access to storage space for tools and materials. Additionally, Sawtooth School offers various studios for ceramics, drawing, metals, photography, and a woodshop.
The resident is eligible to take all Print department classes or workshops tuition-free and can access discounts to other Sawtooth departments’ classes on a case-by-case basis.
Sawtooth School will facilitate structured and unstructured opportunities for the resident to engage with the broader community, including making at least one presentation.
They will also be able to showcase their work in the Residency Show at the gallery after their residency term, with Sawtooth School providing curatorial and technical support.
1 year of access to Adobe Creative Suite All Apps plan, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and more.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Residents are expected to contribute 10 hours weekly to studio maintenance, outreach to local schools, hanging print shows, or other exhibition assistance. Responsibilities for maintaining the print studio include organizing and storing type, monitoring mordants, and general upkeep.
The resident will assist in annual studio fundraisers, community programs, and the annual print portfolio.
Residents have the opportunity to assume teaching positions at Sawtooth. These teaching roles are compensated financially and are separate from the residency stipend.
Residents are encouraged to sell their work in Sawtooth’s Marta Blades Gallery Shop and participate in Sawtooth’s annual holiday market.
Residents are responsible for their own consumables, housing, and transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Be enthusiastic about their craft and dedicated to pursuing their own original designs and projects.
Enjoy working with other people in a community studio setting and be able to use printmaking tools competently, independently, and safely.
Be willing to serve as Sawtooth’s Schupbach-Gordon Resident in Printmaking for one full year.
Prior experience in an educational print studio setting is strongly preferred. Applicants enrolled in a full-time graduate or undergraduate program during the residency period are ineligible.
