Printmaking Lab Technician

The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) seeks a full-time Printmaking Lab Technician with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024. MIAD’s 8,500 sq ft Printmaking facility provides instruction in contemporary approaches to printmaking, (including lithography, intaglio, relief, and screen-printing), letterpress and papermaking. The facility serves the entire student body, from first-year students to upper-level fine arts and design majors. This position provides functional support to the faculty and students in the daily operation of the Printmaking facilities. The Printmaking Technician reports to the Managing Director of Institutional Labs and Director of Academic Administration.

Responsibilities include, but not are limited to:

1. Promote, nurture, and support a welcoming, inclusive educational environment in the Printmaking facilities.
2. Promote broader student usage of Printmaking facilities, equipment, and resources.
3. Educate and enforce Printmaking safety rules and instruct on best practices and procedures for all that use the Printmaking facilities.
4. Supervise student use of the Printmaking facility/equipment.
5. Provide one-on-one assistance to students in technical matters that supplement coursework.
6. Coordinate hiring, scheduling, and supervising of student workers, and any additional staff.
7. Monitor and provide minor repair and preventative maintenance to the instructional facility/equipment in the Printmaking facilities.
8. Engage in open communication with the other lab areas as well as faculty relative to Printmaking facility usage and equipment.
9. Engage in open communication with the Managing Director of Institutional Labs relative to facility maintenance, electrical and mechanical issues and safety compliance.
10. Maintain current records of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information specific to the materials used in the lab area; Conduct safety and procedures demonstrations for students.
11. Create and maintain supply inventories and oversee equipment checkout and returns. Facilitate the supply orders needed for facility and equipment maintenance as well as instructional need.
12. Purchase and procure materials. Properly store and dispose of materials.
13. Manage the Printmaking Lab and equipment budgets and contribute to annual budget development with the Managing Director of Institutional Labs and the Director of Academic Administration.
14. Work with faculty, students, student monitors, and maintenance staff to ensure facilities are clean, tidy, and organized.
15. Provide workshops and other instructional and institutional support, which may include teaching, as requested by the Managing Director of Institutional Labs.
16. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
• BFA degree or six (6) years of demonstrated equivalent professional experience required. MFA strongly preferred.
• Experience working and/or managing a college-level printmaking facility preferred.
• Must have solid technical knowledge and expertise in intaglio, screenprint, lithography, woodcut, and applications in digital print. Experience in papermaking, letterpress, and risography desired. Understanding and experience in oil-based printing desired.
• This position provides direct lab support and must report on-site.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Ability to educate students in all basic printmaking mediums and processes.
• Ability to use a work computer, correspond electronically and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) is a must, as is knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite software.
• Multi-tasking, strong communication and administration skills is a must, as is a collaborative attitude.
• Knowledge of contemporary safety practices in printmaking environments, including appropriate disposal and handling of hazardous materials.
• Ability and interest in maintaining a non-toxic and sustainable studio.
• Curiosity and acquisition of new techniques and processes in Printmaking-related areas encouraged.
• Must have the ability to occasionally lift/move up to thirty (30) pounds and work in a moderately noisy work environment.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license and maintain driving insurability under MIAD’s carrier to gather donations.
