and Juror’s Statement by Mr. Brandon V. Lewis

Mid America Print Council (MAPC) and Louisiana State University (LSU) are pleased to announce the 2026 Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition at the Clark and Laura Boyce Gallery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The exhibition takes place from September 11 to October 10, 2026 with a closing reception in conjunction with the conference on October 9, 2026, 7:15 to 8:45 PM. The exhibition features 52 artworks in a range of printmaking media by 51 artists from around the nation. With 516 entries from 185 artists, this year’s exhibition was especially competitive.
The exhibition was juried by Brandon V. Lewis, Director of the Helis Foundation John Scott Center and Louisiana–based visual artist whose work serves as a living archive of memory, heritage, and Southern Black life. Mr. Lewis thoughtfully selected works to create an exhibition that highlights the adaptable and expressive qualities of the printmaking medium. Mr. Lewis reflects on the exhibition in his Juror’s Statement:
It was both a joy and a privilege to serve as a juror for the Mid America Print Council’s Biennial Conference. As a practicing artist and the Director of the Helis Foundation John Scott Center, I approach printmaking with a deep appreciation for both its technical possibilities and its capacity to communicate ideas, preserve stories, and connect communities.
The work of MAPC is particularly meaningful to me because it honors the rich traditions of printmaking while creating space for experimentation, innovation, and the continued evolution of the medium. Printmaking has always existed at an intersection of process, collaboration, and storytelling, and MAPC’s commitment to making these traditions accessible while encouraging new approaches reflects the vitality of the field.
My service as a juror was also deeply personal. The Helis Foundation John Scott Center carries the name and legacy of John T. Scott, a New Orleans native son whose artistic practice extended across printmaking, sculpture, painting, and numerous other forms. Scott understood art as both a creative practice and a means of building connection, community, and possibility. His belief in the importance of passing knowledge and creative traditions from one generation to the next continues to inform the work of the Center.
Serving as a juror offered me an opportunity to engage with artists who are similarly pushing the boundaries of printmaking while honoring its foundations. I was especially grateful for the chance to encounter work that demonstrated technical rigor, conceptual depth, experimentation, and a willingness to explore what printmaking can become.
I am honored to have contributed to an organization so committed to sustaining the medium, supporting its practitioners, and building a community around the continued exploration of print. It is through opportunities like this that we ensure printmaking remains not simply a tradition to be preserved, but a living and evolving art form with much more to say.
The Mid America Print Council is an educational and community-based organization that focuses on all print related arts. Embracing both time-honored and innovative approaches, MAPC promotes awareness and appreciation of traditional and contemporary forms of printmaking.
LSU College of Art & Design Galleries bridge campus and community by sharing art, design, and research from visiting scholars, faculty, students, and community members through exhibitions, public talks and demonstrations, and hands-on programming. LSU School of Art will host three exhibitions in conjunction with the 2026 MAPC Conference.
Awards for this exhibition will be announced closer to the opening date of the conference. Awards are made possible by these generous sponsors: Acuity Papers, Blick Art Materials, Legion Paper, McClain’s Printmaking Supplies, Morgan Conservatory, and Takach Press.
